Interesting. I wonder what the original family name was. Makes sense, in a way. I don't think it's just a coincidence that "berry" is "yagodka" in Russian and Ukrainian.

Mr. Alex Eli Axent, age 75 years, passed away unexpectedly in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital - McKellar on Friday, April 4, 2003.Alex immigrated from the Ukraine with his family, the late Harry and Vaselina Axentchuk. He served in the Canadian Merchant Marines during the second World War. Alex worked in the elevators and later in construction, specializing in dry wall finishing and was well known as a 'jack-of-all trades'. A member of the Royal Canadian Polish Legion, Branch #149, Alexwas an eager participant in their fish derbies and his name appears on many trophies. He loved to travel with Joyce in their RV van visiting many places in North America, Mexico and Alaska, but had a special fondness for BC and his many fishing trips with Wayne to the West Coast of Vancouver Island. He was an avid fisherman - his favorite lake was Lake Nipigon, played cards, socialized in the 55 Plus Club, kept the bird feeders full, and enjoyed getting together often with family and friends.Alex is survived by Joyce Luski, his loving companion and partner of twenty-eight years; his son Don (Carol) Axent of Thunder Bay; two daughters: Diane Axent of Digby, NS, Carolyn (Steve) Brocklebank of Winlaw, BC; grandchildren: Alexander Axent Hilton, Wolfgang Brocklebank, Erica Axent Hilton, Roxanne Brocklebank; step-children: Michael (Yvonne) Luski of Edmonton, Linda Luski of Winnipeg, Lorraine (Rick) Luski Sage of Toronto, Antoinette Luski of Thunder Bay; step grandchildren: Nikki Waddell, Zoe Luski, Linnea Sage; sister Eleanor Kuzminski of Thunder Bay and brother George (Margaret) Axent of Lake Winnipeg. Also surviving are numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. He was predeceased by his loving son Wayne in 1996; two nephews: Ronnie Axent and Glen Kuzminski; brother-in-law Leonard Kuzminski in 2002.According to Alex's wishes, cremation has taken place, and a Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April 9th, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Rev. Lloyd Ivany with reception to follow. Private Interment will take place in Riverside Cemetery. The Royal Canadian Legion Polish Veteran's Branch #149 will hold a Service of Tribute. As expression of sympathy, donations may be made in memory of Alex to the charity of your choice.
