This is the scenario that has scared the crap out of me for quite some time, that is, that all the fiat currencies will go down the tubes, and Gold will slavishly follow along

I think that your assessment is seriously flawed and that when the day comes that other fiat currencies start to lose their value, the move to own gold will begin in earnest, especially in those countries whose currency values are deteriorating.
The more paper the CB's of the world print, the faster it will happen and is one of the main premises behind what I feel is the inevitability of four figure gold at some point in the future.
I never though it was going to happen solely on the USD:PoG relationship.
We couldn't be farther apart on this matter and rather than try to convince each other of the merits of our respective beliefs, lets just agree to disagree and see what happens towards the end of this decade.
