Yes, they lose money. But that's because air travel has become affordable.
While I agree we must do something to address it, eliminating Amtrak service may not be the best solution (since many depend on using it to get to work, home, etc).
Upgrading existing trackage, laying new track, et cetera---even privatizing the national high speed rail service are far more viable options.
The future lay within three modes of transporation, space/air travel....road travel and rail.
