OT: I have been shown pictures of folk standing with their feet right at the top of street signs during that memorable DownEast winter---that is about 8 feet of undrifted snow.
Actually i know a person who grew up in this house i will have to ask if she has pictures.
The actual measurement of the snow that fell, with no winter thaw that year, was 16feet.
I am digging for weather history.
It is tough but if i can confirm this was in winter of 61/62 it matches exactly what i was told about the FIRST big storm of that winter being a 4 day, nonstop snow.
This refers to Vanceboro, which is in Washington County, but it is on the DownEast coast somewhat north of us.
<<Other heavy snowfall records include: 60 inches at Giant Forest,
California, in 1 day; 42 inches at Angola, New York, in 2 days; 54
inches at The Dallas, Oregon, in 3 days; 96 inches at Vanceboro,
Maine, in 4 days. The greatest seasonal snowfall was 884 inches, more
than 73 feet, at Tarnarack, Calif., during the winter of 1906-07.>>
