#665514 RE: George the Greek #665511

Let me add that the reason for the black beaches and the crescent shape of Santorini is the violent eruption and earthquake said to have destroyed the Minoan empire of Crete and King Minos' palace at Knossis, at which time it was believed that Theseus killed the Minotaur and escaped back to Athens, stopping at the Island of Thira (present day Santorini) and finding half of the island had fallen into the sea, leaving a shear cliff up to what had been the top of a mountain.

Santorini is also connected to the stories of Atlantis, and recent ruins discovered there (and that were just being excavated when I was there) showed the people had hot and cold running water in their homes as well as other 'modern miracles' unknown elsewhere.

It is a very beautiful island and in the sea within the crescent of the island opposite the shear cliffs is a small island with nothing but wild goats and rats on it, all that remains above sea-level of the part of the island that crashed into the sea. It is covered in black ash and with openings in the ground through which gases and smoke still belch. The entire island and surrounding sea is part of a huge caldera that is still active. . .
