The Euros thought, if they won it with common standards (centralized planning, I call it) once, it would work again, even if the burden included slower delivery and higher costs (which is the part Jorma didn't tell them about). I bet that they bet wrong, but that's what makes markets, no?
Perhaps Hutchison knows something that NTT doesn't? ..or perhaps they're relying on that 3G technology which has proved itself so well in the BT (Isle of Man) trials? <g>
Imho, NOK could lock up a great space for itself as the DELL of wireless, marketing and manufacturing, by adopting QCOM technology. I see a NOK/QCOM alliance as absolutely dominant. ...but I have no idea if the bad blood (on both sides) will make it impossible for that dream ever to come to pass.
In the meantime, I'll bet on QCOM's eventual erosion of NOK's market, though not in the very short haul.
