Mar 14, 2005 (streetinsider.com via COMTEX) --The Dow finished 30.15 points higher to close at 10,804, the Nasdaq rose 9.44 points to close at 2,051, and the S&P 500 gained 6.75 points to close at 1,206.

The markets closed out the trading session in the green today as a dip in bond yields and positive action in the biotech space, after news from Genentech (NYSE: DNA) on Avastin, sparked a late day rally.

Volume was relatively light today with 1.43 billion shares trading on the NYSE and 1.70 billion on the Nasdaq. Advancers outpaced decliners by a margin of 17:16 on the NYSE and by a margin of 16:14 on the Nasdaq.

In individual stories, La Jolla Pharmaceutical Company (Nasdaq: LJPC) closed 42.50% lower because the company's drug, Riquent, is unlikely to receive an accelerated approval under the FDA's Subpart H regulation. On the upside, Hansen Natural Corporation (NASDAQ: HANS) closed 26.14% higher as a result of record Q4 and FY04 sales and profits.

Tomorrow traders will be watching for the NY Empire State Index and Retail Sales data, both due to hit the wires at 8:30AM ET, and Business Inventories due out at 10AM ET.

The current contract expired as of midnight, March 12. The union leadership authorized a work stoppage at the plant beginning at midnight, March 12, without a membership vote on the proposed contract. The company is hopeful that talks will continue to resume production as quickly as possible.

Under the extended agreement, Genentech will have access to Abgenix's proprietary antibody generation technology. As a condition of exercising the option, Genentech has purchased Abgenix common stock representing less than one percent of Abgenix's outstanding common stock through a private placement subject to future registration. Abgenix may also receive future milestone payments and fees as antibody programs advance through the collaboration, as well as future royalties on any products that may be successfully commercialized by Genentech.

Mar 14, 2005 (streetinsider.com via COMTEX) --Philip Morris Int'l (NYSE: MO) announced it had bid to acquire a 40% stake in Indonesian tobacco firm PT Hanjaya Mandala Sampoerna. Philip Morris said it will pay cash and expects to complete the tender in 90 days, put the total value of the deal at $5.2 billion, including $160 million of debt.
