Determining Long Term Tops and Bottoms for the DJIA and S&P 500 based on Market Breadth and a few other indicators. Although potential tops and bottoms are marked by red and green horizontal lines, actual tops and bottoms form when divergences become present. For instance a top might be forming for the DJIA when the number of New Highs on $INDU is lower than it has been even though the $INDU is setting a New High itself. What we look for then is confirmation as the $INDU may fail to continue on to New Highs without broad based participation. Many of these charts will not update until after the market close:

Today's action in the SPY formed a small Doji at the lower end of Friday's range suggesting indecision at this juncture. Apr 11, 2005 (streetinsider.com via COMTEX) --The Dow finished 12.78 points lower to close at 10,448, the Nasdaq fell 7.23 points to close at 1,992 and the S&P 500 gained .01 points to close at 1,181.

The markets were weak today as earnings warnings from Ford Motor (NYSE: F) and other firms had investors cautious on corporate profit outlooks going into earnings season.

Volume was light with 1.52 billion shares trading on the NYSE and 1.38 billion on the Nasdaq. Decliners outpaced advancers today by a margin of 18:14 on the NYSE and by a margin of 20:10 on the Nasdaq.

In individual stories, Northfield Laboratories Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLD) closed 31.58% higher after announcing that the pivotal Phase III trial with PolyHeme will continue without modification following the third planned interim analysis of the study data. On the downside, Prana Biotechnology Limited (Nasdaq: PRAN) closed 60.37% lower after announcing it will not proceed with supporting the initiation of the PLACQUE study evaluating PBT1 (clioquinol) for Alzheimer's disease.

Tomorrow traders will be watching for data from the Trade Balance, FOMC Minutes, and Treasury Budget. The Trade Balance is due to hit the wires at 8:30 A.M, while the FOMC Minutes and Treasury Budget are expected at 2:00 P.M.

The data showed that 22 of the 37 patients evaluated (60 percent) achieved an objective response, with eight patients experiencing a decrease in serum M-protein of 50 percent or more and 14 patients experiencing a decrease in serum M-protein of between 25 to 49 percent. Of the twenty-nine patients who had failed prior thalidomide or lenolinamide therapy, 14 patients responded to the TRISENOX regimen. In addition, seven out of 10 patients who had failed bortezomib therapy responded and 10 out of 16 patients who had received prior melphalan therapy responded. The regimen was well tolerated. The few significant adverse events included mild cytopenias, fluid retention, and neuropathy.

OMX: Extends Tender Offer for Its Common Stock [delayed]

Ridgeland, MS, APR 11, 2005 (EventX/Knobias.com via COMTEX) --OfficeMax Incorporated (OMX) announced that it is extending the expiration date of its tender offer for up to 23,500,000 shares of its outstanding common stock, par value $2.50 per share, from 5:00 p.m., New York City time, on Thursday, April 28, 2005, to 12:00 midnight, New York City time, on Monday, May 9, 2005.

OfficeMax has scheduled its 2005 Annual Meeting of Shareholders to be held May 9, 2005. The tender offer is being extended to provide certainty as to the eligibility for voting at the Annual Meeting of all shares of its common stock outstanding on March 21, the record date for such meeting, including shares tendered into the offer. OfficeMax representatives noted that while the record date is March 21, certain provisions of Delaware corporate law prohibit the voting of shares of a corporation which it owns itself. In order to eliminate any issue as to whether tendered shares should be entitled to be voted at the meeting if they are purchased pursuant to the tender offer prior to the Annual Meeting, and to avoid vote count uncertainties resulting from any inability to trace certain shares so purchased, the scheduled expiration of the tender offer is being changed until after the Annual Meeting. As of 5:00 p.m., New York City time, on April 8, 2005, OfficeMax had received tenders from holders of approximately 1,100 shares of its common stock. Under the terms of the offer, OfficeMax reserves the right to further extend the period of time the tender offer is open by notice to the depositary and making a public announcement of such extension.
