What you are saying about oxygen is totally true.

Up to 2% of crude contains oxygen compounds. These include alcohols, ethers, phenolic compounds, ketones, esters, and anhydrides.

Oxygen would be a concern if an operator or engineer mixed up a purge gas for hydrogen.
