Hmmm. The patent does talk of polysaccharides generally, but the sentence refers directly to sample prep of enoxaparin. It is probably a QA step, as opposed to a direct manufacturing step. The two are intertwined -- much more so than in the manufacture of small molecules -- so Wheeler was being very narrow in his definition of manufacturing via chemical cleavage only, if he in fact put it that precisely. Whatever, semantics, perhaps. But as I and others have noted, it is probable that others can come up with their own versions/equivalents of degrading enzymes.

We may not now for a long time what exactly differentiates Momenta's technology from everyone else's, and to what degree. Too much trade secret and redacted stuff.
