The story's just an attempt to cheapen the guy.

It says more about the people telling it than it does about Fidel.

I agree .. after all these years .... let's see, we are very good friends with many many terrorist states ..it's pathetic to not have open borders or whatever you call it with Cuba. Our good friends the Saudis, Israel, Pakistan, Iraq and our good friend in Afghanistan comes to mind ..I'm sure there is more, but I'm tired of thinking now.. ;)

My Peruvian friend visited Cuba last november ..her whole family .. it was wonderful ! of course they stayed in a beautiful hotel ..and went into town which was about 2 hours away, which I thought that was odd .. but anyway ........she brought back pictures, wish I knew how to put them on here . .. but I don't .

Also .. the Cuban community has ALWAYS had a huge INFLUENCE with OUR politicians .. especially the 'republicans' .. they always loved stirring that commie thing up ..PLUS, they were always hoping that 'we' would do something .. to Cuba that is ... . .this was a long time ago, not recently.. I think they are the only immigrant group that republicans have not hated .. I'm serious.

The fall of the Soviet Union changed the relationship between the two nations. After the Soviet Union collapsed, trade between the Eastern Bloc nations and Cuba came to a grinding halt.

Putin tried to kick start it a few years ago--but he did so in order to mask discontent over the proposed missile defense system that was being built in Poland (when the Bush Administration was pushing the program).

Fidel tried to open up business opportunites several years ago when a host of companies such as Catepillar went to Cuba for a conference, but that endeavor went nowhere.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cuba has suffered greatly. In order to appease the masses, I'm sure Fidel has found ways to make his people happy. He's relaxed tourism, allowed the free exchange of American money (something that was STRICTLY forbidden beforehand)...and allowed some stores to sell American merchandise.
