wbmw, Dual 1.8Ghz 64-bit cores? Sounds cool and it may stabilize Apple's sales. I guess there go the dreams of many AMD fans to have Apple go with Hammer... On the other hand this shows that more companies are trying to find ways to improve cpu throughput without going for Max Mhz/Ghz.
Does anyone know if the Power 4 has a 32 bit mode that is binary compatible with the G4? If this is not part of the 970, then Apple will need to emulate or they will need a lot of SW recompiled. This move should enable apple to hang onto their loyalists and/or swap a new apple user for one they lost, but I doubt is changes the market share over the long run.
Does anyone know why Apple refuses to evaluate Intel processors for their systems? Is the Mac OS so heavily tuned for PowerPC that it would be too much work to port, or is there some other reason? I think adding the "Intel Inside" marketing message to their advertising campaign would be great for sales (I'd even consider buying a Mac then).
