"I think that they [individual investors] finally saw, once and for all, that they cannot compete ...." Strange, though, that I keep seeing that posted on very active message boards by individuals who are obviously immersed in the markets and show no indication of leaving anytime soon. The only people I have actually seen leaving the markets are those who have been wiped out, usually for reasons that are not all that mysterious.
Many on the message boards claim to be buy-and-hold investors to whom the "flash crash" must have been little more than some off-stage fireworks. Even those of us who trade often would have had to be very imprudent (for example, in the use of stop orders) to have suffered any real damage in that event.
