Amazon drops 10%+ in evening session

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Amazon.com Inc. dropped more than 10 percent in Wednesday's evening session after the online retailer reported earnings that missed analysts' estimates.
Amazon.com (AMZN: news, chart, profile) shares fell 12 percent to $36.80 after the Seattle-based company said fourth-quarter profit was 35 cents a share, excluding a one-time tax benefit. Analysts in a Thomson First Call poll were expecting 40 cents a share.
Earnings and sales guidance for the first quarter of 2005 and the full year were in line with analysts' forecasts.
The Nasdaq 100 After Hours Indicator, which tracks the evening action of the index's leading shares, declined 2.68 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1522.42.
Earlier, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDU: news, chart, profile) rose 44.85 points, or 0.4 percent, to 10596.75, while the Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP: news, chart, profile) gained 6.36 points to 2,075.06.
