I've been experimenting with picking tomatoes when they just begin to ripen. In this photo, the fruit at the top ripened mostly on the vine. You can see the big crack, and a couple of smaller ones. I picked the two barely ripening ones yesterday. The two at the bottom will be ready to eat in a couple of days; when I picked them, they looked just like the barely ripening ones. As you see, smooth skin, no cracks:
