You are assuming that Merrill came in this morning, had a cup of coffee, and decided to trim their NAZ MM list. Believe me, they had already prepared for the move long before they made it and it caused little, if any, disruption in the market. Their book on those stocks would have already been pared down to zero (or very close).
The ones they are cutting are most likely stocks you have never heard of, or trade very thin volume, or are ones that are down to penny status. They are keeping any stocks that are profitable to them, which if you watch the spreads on most NAZ stocks and the way they trade, is most all of them.
