It's huge, but has just about everything you wanted to know about boats, handling, navigation, etc.
One of the toughest and most frustrating elements of boating is finding good service. For some reason, good boat mechanics are a rare breed. Lots of flakes out there. Ask other boaters in your area who has the best reputation, and probably more important, who to avoid. They will no doubt have some horror stories for you.
Another good thing to do is check around in the area you plan on keeping the boat and find the local yacht clubs. Like boats, yacht clubs vary from the extremely expensive and formal, to the very cheap and informal. Yacht clubs are a great way to break into the boating scene, meet other boaters and a great source of information.
When you find a boat you are interested in, get it surveyed, even if it's a new one. Don't let the boat broker or owner provide the only surveyor either. Get one of your own. Surveyors are like the mechanics...good ones are rare. For the size of boat your looking at, it might cost you 2-300 bucks or more for a good survey. Well worth the investment.
How about some information on other boating costs? The purchase is just the beginning, especially with a boat this size. They don't call it a hole in the water you throw money into, for nothing. Another saying that is often true. "A boat owners best days are when you buy it, and when you sell it." Large boats are NOT easy to sell.....unless you get lucky, or your offering up a really great deal.
Obviously, fuel is probably the biggest ongoing cost, especially when using the boat often. At best, I get 3/4 of a mile to the gallon with my 45 footer. (it's gas though...diesel would be better)
Maintenance would be next on the list of expenses. Expect to pay for routine cleaning and washing. I had a service clean my boat weekly (outside only), and paid almost $400 per month. Now I do it myself, because I enjoy it and can use the exercise.<g> I also have the boat waxed twice a year at about $500 per pop.
Other maintenance is annually, or as things break or wear out. I expect about $2500.00 on average for that. It will vary.....like bottom painting.....only needed every 3 years or so. Canvas and isinglass (if you have any)get replaced every 5-8 years..depending on wear and tear.
Insurance, is pleasantly cheaper then I ever thought it would be. Mine is $1800 annually.
Taxes! I pay a yearly "Luxury Tax" of 1% of the value. This is a local tax, so many places are different.
Speaking of taxes, you can avoid the purchase tax if you take delivery outside the US. In our area this is only cost effective with at least a $500,000 boat.
The other large expense for me is alcohol and food. During the summer.....very expensive. <g>
