I agree, I've always admired his honesty.
No matter what the CEO does there will always be certain people in favor of it and others against it.
For example, one group of people might complain that he never "answers their questions directly" but if he were to provide TOO MUCH information through his communication with the board, it would border on inside information.
One of the reasons why I think there's nothing wrong - fundamentally or ethically - with his memos; we are given information that some investors who don't read this board might not have, but that information is never earth-shattering.
He has to walk a fine line when he answers inquiries, as any responsible person does.
Public figures - even the CEO's of small pink companies - are often polarizing. How much of what's posted here is actual criticism and how much is just an attempt to sway investor sentiment is uncertain.
As I read your post, I couldn't help but thinking back to the conference calls you alluded to, and I realized the man writes much the same way he speaks - in terms of style, phrasing, and vocabulary. Just seems like his natural way of speaking/writing.
