#51080 RE: chipdesigner #51079

I can see increased demand for AMD chips with the launch of
Windows 64 but Windows 64 on AMD will have to prove itself in
the performance area at some point. It can coast on 32-bit
performance and 64-bit capability.

So far I've seen some improvements on some applications but
there are some other applications that have been recompiled
under 64-bit that have shown no performance improvement which
is of a concern.

The best places to guage the progress of Windows 64 are
Microsoft's newsgroup and PlanetAMD64. Things are going well
but more applications are needed and applications that show off
performance gains are needed. Unfortunately, it seems to me that
there are lots of apps that are tuned for 32 bits and that will
require work to take advantage of the K8 architecture.

BTW, my personal feeling is that Windows XP 64-bit is more
stable than Windows XP (32-bit). It may be that WOW has some
kind of stabilizing effect on applications.

Re: Win x64 is a software product that will almost certainly arrive in late Q1/early Q2. It will have an immediate impact on sales in Q2, as there is no "ramp" to worry about.

The 30 new design wins in the server space coming in Q1 will also have an impact in Q2.

Maybe so, maybe not. Still, whether this translates into a gain for AMD is just speculation....
