Use of COTs assumes the "smart money" is the Commercials. The Non-Commercial group is large speculators (funds, etc.), just looking for a profit, and the Non-Reportables are the little guys (you and me), and are the ones you want to "fade". One uses COTS to see how each group has positioned themselves in the market as a guide to market direction, but not necessarily to institute a specific trade. Comparing current and previous COT reports reveals shifts in position that can be revealing, as well. BTW, you can view COTs w/ or w/o options included in the numbers.
