I, too, am an old man. My bough has been bent for years! LOL.
You are quite correct: Years ago, a man's word was his bond. A handshake was all that was needed on all but the most complex 'deals'. If a problem cropped up later, the parties would resolve it amicably over a cup of coffee...with another handshake to make it official.
