As a high speed internet subscriber with Comcast, you get a free, Netgear wireless router. All you pay is a one time, 9.95 shipping charge.
It was a no-brainer hook up.
Comcast told me I should have been getting 12mb/s of speed, but I was only getting 6 mb/s of speed.
Evidently, my old router was stopping the remaining speed from coming through.
I had a tech from Comcast come out to investigate my speed and all he did was hook up the internet direct to my modem and did a speed test. It went to almost 21 mb/s. Wowser!!
I ordered my new router through Comcast. They put the 9.95 charge on my bill and 2 days later it was in my hands.
I followed mimurray's tips and the hookup went smooth:
The only hitch I had was my Zone Alarm firewall. I forgot to add the older computer into the trusted zone. Once I did that, we were able to print from the second computer. Other than that, it was a snap.
My neighbor paid $60 for a new router and I saw where Comcast charges a couple hundred bucks to hook them up.
Gleno You don't have a wireless router ??? That really supprises me. I thought you were a man of high tech. & I was at the bottom. Even I have had wireless for years, well maybe just 2 or 3. LOL Actually if it weren't for my "High Tech." son-in-law I'ed still be using a abacus. LOL Dan
Gleno, are you getting a wireless device? Curious why you need a wireless router or a router at all if you only have the one desktop. A router won't help the speed, if anything, it will slow it down since it is another device to go through.
Most routers have some security software, which can help.
Just ignore me if I am over the line (none of my business) :=)
