They, the group of other scientists, can't yet agree on the exact amount...which why they might have to estimate.
how ridiculous is that to believe a company like BP to give accuracy in their mishap disaster. they won't.

what instruments did they use to determine that 5000barrels were being dispersed.
most likely they are doing the same thing these other scientists are. based on the radius of the hole and the volume of oil under pressure known to be at the rig site, BP engineers and scientists can make a estimate.
the visual findings already align with much more than 5000barrels. don't you listen to the news ?
