For what it's worth, the term "kraut" did not refer to an ordinary German civilian, but a German soldier or a soldier presumed to be fighting for the German regime (in WWI and WWII). Because the German U-Boat force was a volunteer force, the crew may not have been entirely German; could have been other nationalities serving in the Kriegsmarine. Hence I quoted the witness/survivors' term in quotation marks.
