No racism intended at all. Notice the quotation marks; that's how they were referenced in contemporary literature at the time. Personally, I actually have a healthy respect for the plucky and creative German u-boaters. Many of them conducted themselves as honorable soldiers, especially in the early months of 1942 when the US had just entered the war and the German u-boats were having a tremendous string of successes up and down the east coast, sinking many oil tankers.
