CES keynote is tonight

Bill GATES will deliver the CES Keynote address this evening (Jan 5) at 6:30 p.m. Other headliners include Intel CEO Craig Barrett, HP CEO Carly Fiorina, and Motorola CEO Ed Zander.

Loads o' rumors about whether Xbox 2 gets unveiled. The more sober view is that it will not. If not, it'll be wait 'til March and the Game Developers Conference. But it's hard to conceive that there won't be discussion of its progress and general capabilities if not some tantalizing specifics about its CPU and horsepower.

FWIW, the next generation of gaming machines are going to contain almost incomprehensible power. Xbox 2 will likely sport 3 dual core IBM Power architecture CPUs running at neighborhood of 3 Ghz. In other words we are talking about a machine that will have more than 5 times the total computational power in the fastest Intel-powered desktop PC!!

So ... keep an eye tomorrow a.m. on MSFT, SNE, and the software games folks (i.e. ERTS).
