Also, the numbers I used came from when I worked as a contract/consulting engineer. I was constantly in touch with owners/recruiters for engineering job shop firms. The lowest price a small firm was willing to go was 22%. I believe that was assuming the contract engineer was on a 1099 tax basis and carrying their workman's comp.
It's very possible markups can be in the 40-50% brackets.
