#25008 RE: backitupnorton #25006

Is it that annoying? Sorry about that<G>. Really it should probably read:

small is small

or

small is small

Well, you know what I mean. Anyway, there's a lot of yakkin these days about "nanotechnology" and there's so much overhyping of the area. What I mean is that small (on the nanometer scale) is really small. But then it's not small enough for simple methods of characterization, primarily due to this size range being a rather inconvenient one from the point of view of long-range order. For example, in a perfect crystal, using diffraction we can determine the molecular structure of even very complex molecules, as long as the crystals are very pure, large enough, and ordered enough.

However, particles in the nanometer size range, are too large to be highly ordered into arrays very easily, but are small enough that attractive forces between them can be quite high, leading to problems in handling and examining them. On the micron scale, the particle size is so large that these attractive forces are too weak to cause problems.

Therefore, you see, small (nano) is really small (while at the same time being just a little too large) <G>.

Aren't you sorry you asked? Well hopefully this was amusing, anyway.

Small is small!
