I think that has been the pattern in the USA for the last 70 years. Until recently the problem was relatively inconsequential so people just ignored it.
We have always assumed that asset appreciation would somehow create wealth. Maybe those days are over, but it seems the latest generation to enter the workforce is assuming the same scenario.
