Some would likely clearly prefer more drugs than fewer though given better chance to keep variant mutations from sprouting.

Actually there is a scientific rationale for reducing nucleoside use. The goal of these drugs is to interfere with RNA replication, and that can't be done without interfering with replication of normal cell constituents, such as mtDNA. The sparing reduces side effects.
