Perhaps they are merely using the dollars budgeted for pork to buy now while it is cheap and putting it into storage for use later in the school year? Can't ignore the politics of the farm vote (sigh). AK

Train Guy, re: glut now, shortage later. This arises
from usual market responses in terms of breeding. Old
rule used to be 6 months from breeding to pork on the
table; 2 years for beef. When hog production becomes
less profitable, then breeding stock gets liquidated
leading to later shortages -- and the beat goes on <g>
