The nVidia dGPU is IN ADDITION to the on-package Intel iGPU. This lower-powered iGPU helps them achieve the 8-9hr battery life per charge.
I don't think Intel expected Apple to rely on integrated graphics in their macbookPRO lineup.
I guess you could argue they could've made the discrete GPU an option, as opposed to mandatory.
In fact, Anand, in his review, said he wished he could disable the multiplexer into "iGPU only" mode. I'd agree, would rather have cooler operation and more battery life, unless I was gaming, say.
I think people tend to forget about performance PER WATT when it comes to GPUs. IIRC, the Arrandale GPU is not that bad, by that measure, and the SandyBridge GPU should be quite competitive by that measure.
