I think Becton is a sign of things to come wrt modular design. IIRC it is the first time the Xeon die is truely different (uncore) than a fused off desktop die.

I know there was one before that was a special (can't remember the name) but with the new modular design approach I wouldn't be surprised to see the highend x86 server cadence be pulled in a bit.

And if there is any uncore sharing plans between x86 and Itanium it can work in favor of both to lower design and validation times.

I didn't mean they wouldn't continue Itanium beyond then. Bad choice of words on my part.

I meant that they would continue with Itanium at least until IBM goes foundry. They could surely decide to continue as long as they want beyond that.

I think Itanium is important to the overall strategy.

22nm Xeon MP (the ivybridge variant) will probably be out in Q3/Q4 of 2012. (Note that 32nm SandyBridge EX parts are down for Q4 2011, and I'd guess we'll have the prior 32nm Westmere EX in Q1 2011.)


Unless they head directly to Haswell for MP, but I doubt that.
