#49263 RE: jhalada #49259

jhalada, recent microcomputer history teaches us that there are more important considerations for the manufacturer than whether they offer AMD in addition to Intel.

Dell is the perennial disproof of the AMD & cost argument. They do quite well with their model, and apparently Intel is willing to oblige them with competitive pricing.

Gateway struggled and agreed to be taken over by eMachines management. Gateway was Intel-only, eMachines used both, but the critical difference was Gateway's insane store strategy. Gateway tried to implement Tandy's old strategy that fell apart in the 1980s, they did not learn history's lessons.

IBM long ago stopped trying to make money on PCs. Instead, they kept them around so as to be a one-stop shop for their customers. They did not want to give HP a foot in the door with PCs. IBM woke up to the fact that PCs are fully commodity and one-stop shopping does not need to include PCs.

Now that AMD is focussed on quality and innovation they are winning converts in the industry. If Dell ever does start shipping Opteron servers then it will be for this reason, not price.

With Intel's huge manufacturing capabilities they may very well be transitioning to the low-cost supplier with AMD becoming the quality leader. The price model may be in the middle of a reversal.

Actually, I like this observation. :)

Joe,

I just wanted to post the article as is - everybody reads it and make up his/her own mind how valuable the article is. I read tons of AMD related news(but usually not the tech-heavy chip stuff) and make my own call - I might reduce my AMD postion or purchase more AMD stocks based on some article/news/posts.

It's just an article that I found, if you don't think it's worthy, don't waste your time... and I believe I skipped many, many great posts. You know what, I think you're a much valuable poster than I am, because I am basically, a luker only.
