I noticed in Fred Weber's latest talk that he repeated the AMD line that socket 940 machines can be updated to dual core with just a BIOS change. But they pointedly haven't said the same for socket 939. What are your thoughts on this? Is there a potential problem -- power supply, trace routing, I don't know -- or are they just trying not to Osborne the socket 754 boards and chips until we're nearer to client dual chip release or have better supply of 90 nm. socket-939 chips?

That is true. But there aren't any dual core on the market yet. Hopefully the little tempest that erupted over the article in The Inq dissuades AMD from exploring a new socket for dual core.
Marketing. You gotta love them. When you don't want to draw and quarter them and roast them over a fire...
