IR is watching, aren't they? They have been with every mod being an "insider". (Wyatt, srloan... ever heard of them?) IR should know how to respond and properly inform the public, but if not that's the company's loss (and so far it's a big loss for most).
It's been done before, so if they understand anything about public relations they would understand how to complete proper followup on news.
