You worry too much about storage --or transmission-- efficiency, but you miss the point about --human-- communication efficiency.
Redundancy is neccessary to be able to correct errors. (As you surely very well know)
There's a trade-off between compression, and redundancy.
If you compress too much you cannot correct errors as every message looks like a valid one. The English language has lots of built in redundancy, and that allows us to understand text even if it has lots of spelling errors. (Or has been mangled on purpose)
BTW, where is the efficiency gain between "morons" and "maroons"?
