Whether generic drugs work the same as their branded counterparts depends on the kind of drug in question.
At one end of the spectrum, you have an enzyme-blocking drug such as Proscar, where the dose barely matters* and it's almost impossible for a change in the formulation to produce a different outcome.
At the other end of the spectrum you have such drugs as Synthroid / Levoxyl, where tiny alterations in the effective dose due to differences in formulation can have a profound effect.
Most drugs fall in between these two poles. With Adderall, for instance, I’ve detected slight differences in efficacy between the various marketed generics.
*Once the drug’s concentration is sufficient to block the target enzyme efficiently, additional amounts of the drug do nothing.
