Unclevername... Actually, if it's true granite, it's speckled. There are, of course, many other stones that are sold for counter tops. They are often referred to as granite, but are usually metamorphic rocks. Each variety of these stones has it's own characteristics in structure, hardness, absorption, etc..

I got into this when recently working with marble and seeking the correct tools for drilling and shaping it. It turns out that the the name "marble" is thrown around as loosely as the name "granite".

"...granite and then the cabinets" - good tip for me to remember. Cabinet selection comes next for me. I like cherry; haven't heard prices yet.
