Best Western drops Beck over his ‘Obama = unAmerican’ comments:

"Needless to say, I’m not alone in this outrage- a petition for this incident is already circling the web via Media Matters. Combined with the signatures on the pre-existing petition from ColorOfChange.org and the efforts of Stopbeck.com, Beck's remaining sponsors are under serious pressure to sever their ties to him. Best Western dropped sponsorship Friday (2/5/10), making them the 101st sponsor he’s lost to this kind of speech."

Best Western Drops Beck Over His Comments About Obama's Name

- February 7, 2010

Glenn Beck must be a really slow learner. Case in point: on Thursday, February 4th, 2010, Beck said this about President Obama on his radio show: “He chose to use his name, Barack, for a reason. To identify, not with America -- you don't take the name Barack to identify with America.. You take the name Barack to identify with what? Your heritage? The heritage, maybe, of your father in Kenya, who is a radical? Really? Searching for something to give him any kind of meaning, just as he was searching later in life for religion.”

I don’t even know where to begin on this one- maybe I’m biased by being an American who has a Japanese name and has gone by a nickname for years because of the kind of attitude Beck displayed, but I’m severely offended. I’m not an American because my name doesn’t meet some standard of American value? Ookiosewada, Meesta Beck!

Needless to say, I’m not alone in this outrage- a petition for this incident is already circling the web via
Media Matters. Combined with the signatures on the pre-existing petition from ColorOfChange.org and the efforts of Stopbeck.com, Beck's remaining sponsors are under serious pressure to sever their ties to him. Best Western dropped sponsorship Friday (2/5/10), making them the 101st sponsor he’s lost to this kind of speech.

I wonder what Roger and Rupert will have to say about Beck's latest stunt - especially if the repercussions are anywhere near as severe as those that ensued when Beck called Obama a racist...

Re: Speaking to a small group of conference attendees and ThinkProgress during lunch on Saturday, Bachmann outlined how the Republican Party and its 2012 nominee must address the national debt. Bachmann referenced Glenn Beck, who falsely warned about a $107 trillion in supposed “unfunded liabilities” from Social Security and Medicare. She then called for a “reorganization” of entitlements where people “already in the system” would continue to receive benefits, but “everybody else” would be weaned off:

Well I say we put it to a national vote. How many people in Bachman's district do you think will like this idea:

"We can fix the deficit, folks! All it takes is for you 55-65 year olds to give up on your retirement prospects. How's that sound?"

"And for you 45-55 year olds, you still have time to work on retirement if you work twice as hard. And you know all those paychecks you've been putting into Social Security? Those will get to pay for someone else's benefits, but sorry - you're below the cutoff."

"And lastly, for you 30-45 year olds, get ready to work 3x as hard, because now you have to take care of Mom and Dad, since they won't be retiring any time soon, and now they won't have Medicare to pay for doctor's bills."

"Everybody happy, yet?"

digby's thought:

What she [Bachmann] fails to note is that unless we can arrange for all the old people to die much younger (and without Medicare that's fairly likely, since nobody who isn't Donald Trump would be able to afford health care when they're 80) all the young people had better set aside some of their tax savings for training in incontinence management because mom and dad are moving in.
