It's not unreasonable to suspect that....although there isn't much evidence to support the theory (outside the Fed's "probe" into Toyota).
Keep in mind that Toyota of North America has several plants based here in the United States that produce many popular vehicles like the Tundra, Tacoma and the Highlander. The Prius---I think---is produced in Japan (as well as the Scion brand). Most of the parts comes from the North American market...so what affects Toyota (quality wise) may affect other car companies as well (Ford, Subaru, Nissan), etc---all of whom have plants here in the United States as well.
