>>But it's MY MONEY, and I know best how to use it!! <<
Let's say that you can manage YOUR money very well. That is a good reason why you should support a Social Security Insurance system that DOES NOT allow the individual to manage those funds. Let me explain why.
You must be pragmactic about this. You and I both know that the Public would never accept seeing massive numbers of elderly homeless people walking the streets looking for food. If that was the case their would be social programs put in place to help feed and house these folks. If not for Social security those programs would have to be paid through higher taxes by those that "know best how to use it(their money)". With Social security at least those folks are contributing to an insurance fund that will help them in their retirement years without them having to go to the government (taxpayers) for handouts.
Now I am not saying that the Social security system has been managed well. All I am saying is that it is impossible to judge who is good with managing their money and who is not. Social security is an insurance program. We would never think about going to a insurance company and demanding them to allow us to manage a portion of the premiums that we pay them.
In my opinion folks should not look at social security as a savings account. It should be looked more at like insurance. We all pay car insurance knowing that if we get in an accident our damages will be covered. We all accept that our premiums may exceed and damages that we would ever collect. However, we also feel comfort in knowing that we have the coverage and that everyone is paying into the system.
Social security should not be thought of any differently. Without it (whole or in part)we would have a situation where those that work hard and invest wisely would be burdened much more than what we are now with those that don't.
I am a conservative republican. I disagree strongly with the current administrations policy to partial control of funds by individuals. As one that has planned for my retirement, I don't want my assets to become a source for someone that has not or, someone that took their own control and screwed up.
