First let me say that I know you, of all people, have considered everything I'm about to write. I don't want to bore you but am inspired to ruminate.
My mind begins to spin when I think of all the complexities of addressing this magnificent quote that appeals to me on many levels but brings up all kinds of buts, ifs, possibilities and limitations. The first idea that comes to mind is that most of us may be programmed to follow a leader. The alpha dog maintains order for the pack so that things can get accomplished - having all chiefs and no Indians results in utter chaos. Some of life's infuriating unpleasantries, like the fact that mms shorting stock actually maintains an orderly market, are necessary evils, the consequences of which (especially at times when decadence is free to run naked through the streets) do not always equate to the greater good. Most people are apparently, observably ill equipped to take their destinies into their own hands. That's #1 and only a thought and does NOT preclude the fact that self-empowerment is possible - a mobilizing, liberating force in many contexts. SOMETIMES, however, the ubiquitous, short-sighted quest for satisfaction of self-interests destroys the entire fiber of the whole.
I'll submit subsequent #s in stages. Must attend to portfolio now but thank you very much for inspiring me.
