The USA had 121,446 filling stations ( gas stations ) in 2002 according to the Census
I guess it is because they produce it in that part of the world. Ethanol can't be piped, so must be transported by truck across the U.S. I will also say that making ethanol from corn is a very bad idea, as corn is one of the worst feed stocks for production, not to mention usage of food stock production land for transportation. jmho....and of many others, as well. Anyway, that is how the farmers and the politicians from the midwest want it.
I guess people that don't have much availability will not be buying a car that uses E-85 only for some time to come....pity, some say.
