Actually, the best evidence suggests we need to slow way down and go way back, because far from being able to take in anything new, it turns out many of our fellow citizens, especially Bush supporters, are stuck like bugs in amber in some early misperceptions that have never been cleared up.
I had the very same experience when discussing the election with a long time friend who is a Catholic pro-lifer and who in the past has marched hand in hand with the Christian fundamentalists.
The few issues this person grasped were those that the electorate has been steered toward by this administration and only those. These were concerns that generally centered on the superiority of the white American Christian.
The United States is safer now, the world might not be, but who cares? This person was not cognizant of the marked increase in refinery fires the U.S. has endured and that they were probably the product of terrorism on U.S. soil.
They were secure in the knowledge that this whole mess is not about oil even though this administration admits it is about oil.
Terrorism is the main problem although this administration confesses it is China.
Bush’s missile defense system is aimed at countries it is not pointed at terrorists. You cannot bomb Sicily to rid it of the mafia. This is about world domination not terrorism, the missile placements do not lie.
There was no recognition of this most elementary fact that we are in an aggressive arms race or a new Cold War. I am baffled that any thing as large as our present arms race which has permeated the news can escape the attention of these ‘incredibly informed people’.
You know the drill.
The interesting part involved my friend’s rabid anti-abortion stance. Bush is pro-life and they couldn’t be happier. How the hell can a man who looks to be responsible for the Beslan slaughter of Russian children and the dropping of depleted uranium on both the Iraqis and our own troops condemning them to cranking out severely deformed babies for a long time to come be pro-life?
This obviously be too involved, as long as Bush is pro-life his penchant for slaughtering babies outside the abortion issue is apparently not a dichotomy.
As Catholics they could ultimately be voting for their own destruction but this also is beyond their scope.
