Wimax isn't Wifi or Wlan. It blows the doors off of everything else. I've seen talk of 70mbps. When it's that fast, VOIP then becomes possible. Who needs a cell phone then? Who needs 3G, 4G or any G. It's dirt cheap to deploy and it's range is 10's of miles. How's it work? Beats me. They're talking about using it for the last mile board band connection. To "replace" DSL and cable.
What Wifi did was shoot 3G in the foot such that you wouldn't use 3G for a data connection if you could get Wifi. 3G was a couple of years back suppose to be all the rage by now, and it still hasn't really gotten off the ground. And in the mean time something better has come along. Took to long and is now obsolete before it really gets used. As far as I know, QCOM has nothing to do with Wimax. Oops, all those patents, worthless.
