Yup, Pileated Woodpecker. They are big suckers. Not really uncommon, but amazing how a bird that big can not be seen.

Can I go scuffle through those leafs? Late fall looks so inviting.

OT -- Speaking of those Pileateds, once in southern Chile while hiking in an old growth Beech forest we came upon a Magellenic Woodpecker. Looked half again bigger to us than a Pileated and of a remarkably similar design. Nearly all black, with some red on the crest, and our total peace and quiet was interrupted by his BANG BANG BANG hammering away with reckless abandon.

They say football players have it rough in terms of brain injury, but those large woodpeckers must be totally nuts by old age from all the banging they do!

This one pictured below has way more red than the one we saw... I think he's a male and perhaps we saw a female. Like the Pileateds (one of my favorite birds), this was an incredible sight and completely made our day.

In edit, here's a pic of a female, below. This is a bit more like it, but I remember a little more red. Even in the middle of Patagonia, maybe this girl had some metro-sexual tendencies or gender identity issues. Don't they say it happens everywhere?
