Most don't realize that solving unemployment and putting people back to work does more for their general well being in this country than a tax cut, or a few extra points in the stock market.
Re: The Dow closed over 10000 and unemployment is 10%. Companies are simply in the driver's seat. They could bring back the outsourced jobs and knock enemployment back down to 5%.
I don't think there are enough big companies to do all that hiring. I think a large chunk of unemployment comes from small businesses across America. When the economy busts, and people are spending less money, then small businesses are typically hurt the most.
There's also an argument that Wall Street is a leading indicator for economic recovery. This is because - even outside of the wealthy bankers - many regular Americans have their savings in the stock market, and when their portfolios go up, they spend more. And when they spend more, you'll see small businesses spring up to fill demand.
I actually see the Dow at 10k as being a positive indicator. It has a dark side of it, of course, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's primarily greed driven.
