Powerful Earthquake Off Vanuatu Prompts Tsunami Alert For Southwest Pacific
1 hour, 12 minutes ago
(RTTNews) - A powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck off the Vanuatu Archipelago on Wednesday, prompting a tsunami alert for the south-west Pacific region.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck at a depth of 22 miles, with its epicenter located some 180 miles northwest of Vanuatu's largest island, Santo.

Shortly after the quake struck, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for the region, including Papua New Guinea and Fiji and other island nations in the south-west Pacific.

Earlier in the day, an earthquake of 6.7 magnitude struck off the Philippines, but no tsunami warning was issued for that quake. The US Geological Survey said the 6.7 magnitude quake struck in the Celebes sea, some 280km southeast of Jolo in the southern Philippines.

There have so far been no immediate reports of injuries of damage in both the quakes. The two quakes came just days after a tsunami generated by a powerful 7.9 magnitude earthquake killed some 170 people in Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga last week.
