“When we license technology to a commercial partner, NASA is absolutely committed to helping the partner be successful, but it is up to that partner to be successful,” Smith said. “Every time we do this, we are trying to get a product to market. That’s definitely our goal.”
Barbera was able to quickly execute the Space Act Agreement with NASA Ames — it took only about six months — because his previous NASA experience gave him insight into the agency’s culture and methods.
“He knew the ropes and he knew the rules, and it was a pretty quick and easy thing for us to do,” Smith said.
